INVITATION & RESERVATION
COPPER CANYON MOTOMOCHILA ADVENTURE
Oct 21-30, 2016
Revised 18 February 2016
As an experienced rider you are invited to participate in an adventure in old Mexico. There will be both motorcycles and sidebysides. Travel over 500 miles in six days on mostly primitive dirt roads, no single track or unusually steep sections. The only high speed sections are the first day and last days on the pavement. And we do have one river crossing. All bikes and sidebysides should be able to maintain a 55 mph sustained speed on asphalt.
Figure on expenses from $750 to $900 depending on needs and wants. The Copper Canyon Motomochila (bikepacking) Adventure is designed for a limited group of experienced riders. There is no chase vehicle.
Copper Canyon (Barranca del Cobre) located 400 miles south of El Paso, Texas in the state of Chihuahua, one of the largest of the 31 United Mexican States. Situated in northwestern Mexico within the Sierra Madre Occidental, the deep canyons of Sierra Tarahumara are claimed to be four times larger in area than the Grand Canyon. The Sierra Tarahumara forests contain the largest stands of old growth forest in the Americas. They produce more pine and oak than any other area in the world.
Copper Canyon is actually a colossal network of six interlacing canyons; four of them are deeper than Arizona’s Grand Canyon. The four major canyons are Sinforosa, Batopilas, Copper, and Urique–the deepest canyon in the system.
They are home to over 75 thousand Tarahumara Indians. Famous for their running skills they call themselves the Raramuri, The Running People.
The Chihuahua al Pacifico Railroad, CHEPE, traverses the area and is one of the most spectacular train rides in the Western hemisphere. It passes through 86 tunnels and crosses 36 bridges as it climbs almost 8000 feet into the rugged Sierra Madres.
